Dear John,

[ [link removed] ]Tell Congress: Hold
corporations accountable
for poisoning Americans

For more than 40 years, the chemical industry has been knowingly poisoning
Americans with products that contain toxic, cancer-causing substances —
all the while sweeping their health risks under the rug.

These toxic fluorinated chemicals, called PFAS, have been linked to cancer
and harm to the reproductive and immune systems. PFAS contamination has
been found in more than 700 communities, and more than 100 million
Americans may have PFAS in their drinking water.^1

Democrats have announced that they will finally try to hold the chemical
industry accountable for devastating communities across the country and
will be holding Congressional hearings soon. We must speak out as loudly
as possible to ensure our lawmakers hold these companies to account.

PFAS, also known as "forever chemicals" because they have no known
half-life and aren't biodegradable, are found in drinking water across the
United States and in common household items, like non-stick pans,
stain-resistant carpets, waterproof clothing and food packaging, including
packaging at popular "green" restaurants like Chipotle and Sweetgreen.^2
PFAS exposure has been linked to a whole host of diseases including
"immune system toxicity, elevated cholesterol, delayed mammary gland
development, effects on the thyroid and liver, and cancer."^3

The companies that produce these PFAS-containing household items,
including DuPont and 3M, have known about these health risks since the
1960s and have brushed reports under the rug in order to avoid
regulation.^4 According to ThinkProgress, "DuPont even tested the blood of
employees for PFAS, while 3M circulated an internal memo in 1978
underscoring the toxicity of its products."^5

It won't be easy for lawmakers in Washington to hold these companies
accountable. The chemical industry has spent millions – and is ready to
spend more – to avoid regulations and oversight of these toxic
chemicals.^6 That's why we must speak out now to demand that Congress hold
the chemical industry accountable for knowingly poisoning Americans for
far too long. Click the link below to sign the petition:
