Hi John.
As you may have heard, last night, our state experienced a heartbreaking tragedy.
A commercial flight, from Wichita, Kansas, to Washington, D.C., collided with a military helicopter over the Potomac River in the D.C. area. My heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with the families who lost their loved ones. This is certainly a terribly painful day for them, and it’s a sorrowful day for our entire state as well. I am grateful to all the first responders who are continuing to respond to this disaster in difficult conditions.
At the moment, we unfortunately do not have many answers as to what happened. As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee and its member of the Aviation Subcommittee, I am in close contact with the National Transportation Safety Board, as well as state and federal officials, to stay informed and offer our full support. Once recovery efforts are complete, it will be important to conduct an impartial, independent, and transparent investigation to find answers and ensure the safety of the flying public.
But for right now, our focus simply must be on helping all the families who are experiencing unimaginable pain. American Airlines has said that if you believe you may have loved ones on board Flight 5342, you may call American Airlines toll-free at 800-679-8215. Those calling from outside the U.S. can visit news.aa.com for additional phone numbers. Family members in Canada, Puerto Rico or the U.S. Virgin Islands can call 800-679-8215 directly.
Moreover, it’s important for everyone to take care of themselves and their mental health right now. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please click here to find a variety of mental health resources on my website. You are not alone, and there are always caring people who are available that can help.
If you have any questions, please let me know.
My warmest regards,
Sharice L. Davids Member of Congress
