Hey John, it’s Aru with Sunrise Movement.
Today, I'm feeling heavy. The plane crash in DC, immigrants and trans people under attack from the Trump administration, it's all so much to deal with. But I want to also talk about why the last few days have made me hopeful.
A memo from Trump’s budget office this Tuesday ordered a complete and total freeze on “all federal financial assistance,” including "green new deal social engineering policies".
But yesterday, after massive public outcry, another memo went out rescinding that former memo. This is a huge win, but that doesn’t mean this is over.
Donald Trump has shown us that he is a cruel, wannabe dictator who only cares about money, power, and the billionaires who can keep him in power. He’s shown us that he is willing to ignore the Constitution and throw his own voters under the bus to advance those goals.
That’s why we need a long-term plan to beat back Trump’s authoritarian agenda.
The good news? The last two days showed us the playbook for stopping Trump. We need to take action and take control of the story.
Massic outcry from people like you and from champions in the Democratic Party made this a politically toxic move for Trump. Together, we all exposed this for what it was: Trump straight up stealing from our communities while making the rich richer.
When we show everyday Americans what Trump's vision for America is, he loses. That's the strategy we need to continue to use — and to keep sharpening — in the months ahead.
Nobody will be safe from the effects of their plan to slash government programs. This will affect everything from Medicaid to cancer research, Head Start programs to schools, housing to home-heating, food programs like Meals on Wheels, even suicide prevention hotlines and domestic violence shelters. They want to destroy every program which makes life easier for working people, and they want to destroy every regulation that prevents billionaires from squeezing more profits out of us.
People are waking up to the inhumanity of Trump’s administration, one day at a time, but it’s not going to happen quickly enough on its own.
That’s why the first part of our four year plan is highlighting the Trump agenda, breaking it down, and educating people about how to protect our communities and fight back. We need a united front that transcends political identity in order to tackle the wealthiest and most powerful in the world, and together, step by step, we’re going to build it.
Together in movement,
Aru
