John,
Immigrants in our community are under attack, especially our undocumented neighbors. I’m speaking out against the Trump administration’s violent proposals such as punishing sanctuary cities, dismantling asylum and humanitarian parole, sending ICE to places like schools and churches, and banning refugees—even those who were already cleared after waiting patiently for years.
Yesterday, I joined local elected leaders and advocates, including the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, to defend our immigrant neighbors and inform them of their rights.
The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center is providing extensive Know Your Rights information sessions and materials, some of which I shared with you last week. The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center also provides critical legal aid to undocumented immigrants.
As the only organization representing all unaccompanied children in federal immigration custody in Michigan, and the only free call for legal services that immigrants can make from immigration detention in Michigan, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center is vitally important.
But over 80% of the group’s legal services are supported by federal funds, and in the ongoing confusion around which federal grants will be frozen by the Trump administration, these legal services could be in jeopardy. Already, the group received a stop work order for their Helpdesk, which helped 4,000 immigrants in Detroit last year.
At this urgent moment with the Trump administration potentially freezing funding, we need to support the crucial organizations that serve as lifelines for our marginalized neighbors, including immigrant families. Please join me in supporting the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center (MIRC) with a donation today to power their essential work.
Last year, MIRC’s five offices throughout Michigan provided direct legal services to more than 5,000 immigrants who otherwise could not have afforded representation. In 2018, they helped make sure every child brought to Michigan during the family separation crisis was successfully reunited with family members.
As ICE agents harass and round up immigrants in racist raids, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center needs our support more than ever. We all belong here, and we all deserve dignity and safety. The time to protect each other is now.
Please rush a donation to the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center today.
Thank you for always being by my side as we work together to lift up our shared humanity. I am a child of immigrants, and I promise to keep fighting back against these racist policies, including plans for mass deportation. In love and solidarity,
Rashida
