There are two new checkboxes on page 2 of the 2024 Form M1, Minnesota Individual Income Tax Return. Here is a brief description of the new checkboxes as well as existing ones:
I do not want my paid preparer to file my return electronically.
Check this box if your client does not want you to file the return electronically. This prevents the $5 fee for filing a paper return from applying.
I am filing this return for Net Investment Income Tax (NIIT) requirements (see instructions).
This checkbox is new. Check this box if you are only filing this return for NIIT purposes.
I authorize the Minnesota Department of Revenue to discuss this tax return with the preparer or the third-party designee indicated on my federal return.
Check this box for limited Power of Attorney (POA). This type of POA expires one year after the due date of the return and is only good for the tax pro who prepared the return, not the entire firm.
I authorize the Minnesota Department of Revenue to share necessary return information with MNsure for the purpose of contacting me with information about my estimated eligibility for free or reduced-cost health insurance (see instructions).
This checkbox is new. If your client is uninsured, they can check the MNsure box and Minnesota’s official health insurance marketplace will send them information. Your client will be contacted by mail and there is no obligation to sign up for coverage. Only select data is shared with MNSure, not the entire return.
