This week Governor Josh Green traveled to Washington, D.C. to warn U.S. Senators against the confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services. Mr. Kennedy's history of spreading dangerous vaccine misinformation, taking millions of dollars from anti-vaccine organizations while trying to conceal those payments, and contributing to disease outbreaks that have claimed the lives of children makes him unfit to lead our nation’s public health efforts.

Mr. Kennedy’s dangerous rhetoric directly contributed to the tragic 2019 measles epidemic in Samoa — which infected thousands and killed 83 people, primarily children. As Hawaii’s Lieutenant Governor and a practicing physician at the time, Josh led an emergency medical team to Samoa to administer life-saving vaccinations after misinformation — much of it spread by RFK Jr. and his network — led to a collapse in immunization rates. The team from Hawaii saw firsthand the devastating consequences: grieving parents, overwhelmed hospitals, and a nation in crisis.

The impact of Mr. Kennedy’s reckless actions extend beyond Samoa. He has spread vaccine misinformation globally, leading to preventable disease outbreaks that have infected thousands. Now, we know he was financially motivated to do so. Between 2017 and 2023, he received at least $2.2 million from the anti-vaccine organization Children’s Health Defense while falsely claiming to be unpaid and concealing over $430,000 in payments. This is not just dishonesty — it is a betrayal of public trust that should disqualify him from leading HHS.

The Department of Health and Human Services must be led by someone who values science, facts, and the protection of public health above all else. RFK Jr. has shown, time and again, that he is willing to sacrifice public safety for personal and ideological gain. If confirmed, he could reverse decades of progress in preventing disease and put countless American lives — especially our children — at risk.
