Dear john,
This week, many Conservative politicians have supported the President's federal grants freeze despite the catastrophic consequences this would have on communities like ours.
Speaker Mike Johnson: "I fully support it."
Governor Abbott: "[The pause is] long overdue."
Senator Tuberville: "[The funding freeze is] right on target."
In fact, one of them said the funding is "a blanket rule that gives kids lunches in high school who are capable of...getting a job that makes them have value, thinking about the future rather than thinking about how to sponge off the government." You can watch him say that here.
From street improvements and crucial law enforcement services to healthcare and programs like Meals on Wheels, everyone in our community is affected by federal funds.
So when I hear ignorant comments like these, suggesting children shouldn't have access to healthy lunches - or any lunch - they otherwise couldn't afford, it makes me incredibly disappointed and outright angry.
