Dear John,
We know news of the current pandemic is overwhelming, but we also know that many
in the Animal Legal Defense Fund community want to continue to help. The recent
stimulus bill in the U.S. contains important changes to charitable giving, and
so we’re sharing this information as you seek to contribute to causes you care
about. There are two provisions of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic
Security Act (CARES) that affect all of us.
First, if you do not itemize your taxes, you are eligible for as much as a $300
charitable deduction. This is known as an “above the line” adjustment to income
that on a dollar-for-dollar basis reduces your adjusted gross income. You can
take this adjustment for cash gifts to public charities. Married couples may
deduct up to $600. So far, this provision appears to be only available for gifts
made in 2020.
Second, if you itemize your taxes, you may take charitable deductions up to 100%
of your adjusted gross income. Previously this limitation was set at 60%.
Anything beyond that could be carried forward to the next taxable year. Please
understand that it may not always be to your advantage to deduct 100%.
If you are uncertain about whether these provisions will benefit you, please
consult a professional.
We hope you are staying safe during these uncertain times. We are doing
everything we can to ensure this is true for our staff and volunteers. Even
during this pandemic, we continue to file high-impact lawsuits, provide free
legal assistance to prosecutors, push for animal protection legislation, and
offer resources and opportunities to law students and professionals to advance
the field of animal law.
We can continue fighting to protect animals’ lives and interests — because of
supporters like you. Your generous donation to the Animal Legal Defense Fund empowers us to stand as
the legal voice animals need — fighting to establish comprehensive legal
protections, rescuing animal victims of cruelty and neglect from abusive
situations, and ensuring animal abusers are held accountable for their crimes.

Our work would not be possible without you. Thank you for standing with us and
with animals. For the animals,
