John,

This week, President Trump tried to singlehandedly gut the federal government with a reckless, unconstitutional order.

Even though a federal judge blocked the order on Tuesday night, Trump’s actions threw the lives of millions of Americans into uncertainty and chaos.

I’ve spent the last few days meeting with neighbors and community leaders across the 6th district — in Mason and Clallam, Pierce and Grays Harbor — many of whom rely on the critical lifelines cut off by Trump’s order: Head Start childcare, Medicaid, Indian Health Service, grants to small businesses, and so much more. We have already been in touch with over 100 community leaders to better understand the impact of this funding freeze.

Let’s be absolutely clear: The President does not have the power to deny these critical services to the American people without the approval of Congress. A judge’s injunction stopped him for now, but we’re not taking our eyes off this for a second.

Our communities are already struggling. Our lives are already uncertain. It’s not too much to ask that our leaders work to alleviate our burdens, not add to them.

My team and I will continue to work on the issues facing working families.

In service,

— Emily
