Over the last three years, EPA reversed course on protecting Americans from known cancer-causing chemicals. The agency adopted an illegal practice of ignoring exposure to dangerous chemicals from the ground, air, or water when evaluating their health and safety risks. EPA abandoned its duty to ensure workers are protected from chemical risks.
Now, the former chemical industry exec behind these decisions – who consistently throws Americans’ health and safety under the bus – could gain day-to-day control of the Consumer Product Safety Commission, which is charged with ensuring the safety of baby cribs, children’s clothes and toys, cleaning products and much more.
We can’t let this happen. Take action today, and demand your Senators oppose President Trump’s nomination of Nancy Beck.
Nancy Beck served as an executive for the American Chemistry Council – a trade association with a history of spending millions of dollars a year lobbying against regulations that affect the chemical industry.
But three years ago, she joined the Trump EPA as a senior official in the agency’s chemical safety office – overseeing decisions on whether and how to regulate the very companies she used to represent. Then last year Beck accepted an assignment at the White House – where she has exerted even greater influence on policy across agencies.
Her actions under this administration read like the chemical industry’s wish list. They include:
- Undermining our landmark toxic chemical safety law, including by making changes to the framework rules that govern how the system works that mirrored those requested by her former employer.
- Playing a key role in blocking and weakening proposed bans on high-risk uses of the toxic chemicals trichloroethylene and methylene chloride.
- Helping to suppress and then kill off the agency’s scientific assessment of the risk posed by formaldehyde.
- Leading efforts to weaken a rule meant to restrict certain PFAS – “forever chemicals” linked to birth defects that are commonly found in American water supplies.
Now, she’s been nominated by Trump to be Chair of the Consumer Product Safety Commission until the end of 2025 – a post that’s responsible for ensuring that everything from our cleaning products to our clothing are safe.
With Beck’s record, we simply can’t trust her with this power. Make sure your Senators know that a vote to confirm Nancy Beck is a vote that puts all Americans’ health at risk.
