This time next week, MPs will be debating the debt crisis in lower-income countries, and whether or not to bring in a new law that could help cancel the debt.  

This law could free up vital resources needed to fund healthcare and education in lower-income countries, and help end the biggest debt crisis in thirty years.  

Thanks to your campaigning, the ‘Debt Relief’ Bill, introduced by North London MP Bambos Charalambos as a private member’s bill, has started making its way through parliament. But it will only become law if enough MPs convince the government to act.  
 

Can you email your MP now to ask them to come to the debate and speak out in support of debt cancellation?  

This new law couldn’t be more urgent - right now 32 countries in Africa are spending more on debt repayments than on healthcare.  

But here in the UK we can have a real impact by tightening the rules that let private lenders like banks, hedge funds and oil traders off the hook for their role in the crisis.  

90% of lower-income country debts owed to private lenders are overseen by UK law. This means the government could pass a new law that would make the debt relief process faster and fairer.  
 

Can you make sure your MP supports the bill?  

The need for this new law will be debated in parliament on the 6 February, and we want to make sure this debate makes a splash.  

We need as many MPs as possible to turn up and speak out in support of the bill. But they will only do that if they think it’s important to their constituents, and friend, that’s where you come in.
