Dear friends,

After Trump signed a flurry of policies targeting migrants and rolling back protection for LGBTQ+ people,

no one seemed willing to stand in his way.

That’s when Bishop Mariann Edgar Budde knew she had to speak truth to power at Trump’s inaugural prayer service. She asked the President to show mercy to people who are scared for their lives all around the country. She’s been facing death threats and Trump’s fury since .

That’s where we come in: Bishop Budde used her pulpit to confront a bullish President andthis is our chance to show that her message and courage have massive support across the world. Add your name now, and when it’s huge, we’ll bring this straight to Bishop Budde so she knows we have her back as she weathers Trump’s attacks. Sign and share with all your friends.

The Trump White House claims Bishop Budde weaponised her sermon and should apologise to the President for the lies she told. But she spoke with respect and humility, and literally pleaded for mercy for those who are living in fear. Her message wasn’t political – it was basic compassion.

Bishop Budde has nothing to apologise for, and she shouldn’t face these attacks alone. As imperfect as it is,the U.S. is a democracy: it does not elect kings , or punish critics for offending the crown. No one, not even the President, is above the law, or the right to free speech.

It’s fitting that Bishop Budde spoke to the President from the pulpit where Martin Luther King Jr. preached his final Sunday sermon. Like his plea for justice, her plea for mercy touches us all.Let’s show the Bishop that thousands of us support her and her message all around the world in the face of these brutal attacks. Add your name and share everywhere.

Stand with Bishop Budde against Trump’s attacks ( [link removed] )

When Trump took office the first time, millions of us stood together all over the world to reject his divisive and prejudiced brand of politics. And no matter the country, our movement consistently stands up to attempts by the far right to prey on those our laws protect the least. The only way their ideas win is if we stay silent – so let’s speak up louder than ever.

With hope and determination,
John, Kaitlin, and the whole Avaaz team
