This week, chaos erupted across the country as Donald Trump called for a unilateral halt of federal financial assistance programs that millions of Americans rely on. It’s outrageous, reckless, and entirely avoidable.
What does that mean, exactly?
It is effectively an instantaneous cut of services that everyday Americans depend on. This means vital services for housing, public health, education, and senior care could stop overnight, leaving countless Americans stranded. Even the universally-loved Meals on Wheels program is alarmed about the impact this could have on the communities they serve.
Why is Trump doing this?
Because he and his billionaire buddies — like Elon Musk and his DOGE project — are aiming to slash government services for the poor and middle class to give the oligarchy massive tax cuts. They want to defund government for *US* to fund enrichment for themselves.
This decision itself is a confirmation that Trump is following the Project 2025 agenda that we feared — a far-right agenda designed to dismantle government programs and consolidate power for the wealthiest few.
Where does this stand now?
Things are changing quickly, but as of now, a judge has temporarily suspended the implementation of the funding freeze, pending further judicial review. The Trump Administration has rescinded the initial memo that spurred this mess, but some administration officials are saying the freeze is still in effect. Overall, it remains a confusing mess for everyday Americans created solely by the incompetence of the Trump Administration.
What are Democrats doing to fight back?
Because of supporters like you, California is sending a larger Democratic delegation to Congress in 2025 than we had in 2024. We flipped three seats from red to blue, and now have more influence to fight to restore these lifesaving programs and ALSO fight against tax cuts for billionaires in Congress.
If you want to help our delegation keep up the fight, you can pitch in a donation right now. Otherwise, we will keep you posted on any new developments. [[link removed]]
