Hi John,
It’s my pleasure to wish all teachers, staff, and tamariki the best for the 2025 school year. The start of the school year is filled with excitement and potential, and I’m sure many – parents included – have been looking forward to it.
I’ll admit, I’ve been a bit nervous for the start of this school year. Labour is incredibly proud of the school lunch programme which we built with communities, helping create local jobs and ultimately feeding over 200,000 hungry students – many of whom weren’t otherwise getting lunch.
Unfortunately, National slashed school lunch funding and handed the jobs to a global corporation instead.
That’s despite warnings that cuts could risk achievement, attendance, nutrition, the wellbeing of children, as well as having wider impacts on reducing child poverty.
I am disappointed to already be hearing about meals that kids could not eat, meals arriving hours after they were needed, and mislabelled packaging.

I have also been worried about school bus routes being cancelled or altered, like in the West Coast and Hawkes Bay, meaning parents are facing hours out of their day to get their young people to and from school.
And about the future of important school classroom and building upgrades. National has pulled $2 billion from these projects – yet they somehow still found $2.9 billion for tax breaks for landlords.
As young people go back to school, we want them to make the most of their time there. Learning, playing and growing into people that will live fulfilling lives and contribute to our society. We should be proud of our education system, and we can do so much better than this.
If you want to get in touch with me about any of these issues, you can reply to this email. I will be working harder than ever this year to stand up for schools and school communities facing cuts.
Talk soon,
Jan Tinetti
