Folks,
Earlier this week, Donald Trump ordered a pause on all federal grants and loans.
Chaos ensued. And fear. That was the point.
A judge blocked the order from taking effect — and the White House hastily rescinded the order hours later.
But in that in-between period, communities across our state and the country were left scrambling.
We still never got answers to some of the most fundamental questions, like:
Will Medicaid cover health care for the nearly 15 million Californians who rely on the plan?
Will fire departments, who worked overtime to put out the Eaton, Hughes, and Palisades fires, be cut off from funding?
Will children who rely on free meals at school go hungry?
Will FEMA be able to provide relief for communities devastated by the recent wildfires?
Will veterans and homeless people lose benefits and have to seek shelter elsewhere?
If Trump wants to “make America great again,” it is certainly not by doing this.
And Democrats need to fight this, because the Trump administration has made it clear, they will try it again until they starve the government.
And why? So they can divert the federal resources Americans depend on to fund tax cuts for wealthy people and large corporations.
With a single order, we saw the extent to which the White House is able to dramatically impact the lives of millions of people across the country — in red and blue states, in rural and urban communities, from all walks of life.
I will not let millions of Californians and Americans be harmed as the White House works to appease Elon Musk and other ultra-wealthy advisors.
We’re going to fight back — today and every day — and I won’t rest until vital programs like Medicaid, disaster relief, and public safety are protected.
