WILL Appeals to Trump Admin in Green Bay Schools Discrimination Case WILL filed a Title VI civil rights complaint with the Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights (OCR) against the Green Bay Area Public School District (GBAPS) and specifically, King Elementary, for discriminating against a dyslexic student based on race. Colbey Decker, a mom from Green Bay, Wisconsin, has a dyslexic son who has been denied reading resources because he is white. Not only does the GBAPS admit this practice through its “School Success Plan,” which explicitly says it prioritizes some racial groups over others, but this message was conveyed directly to Mrs. Decker by a school principal during an in-person meeting. Hear Her Story! WILL Wins In Court! MPS Forced to Comply with State Law! WILL won a significant legal victory against the Milwaukee Public School District (MPS) as a judge denied MPS’ motion to dismiss and granted WILL’s application for an alternative writ, ordering MPS to comply with Wisconsin law and provide the legally required number of School Resource Officer (SROs) in all public schools no later than February 17th. Milwaukee parent and WILL client, Charlene Abughrin, expressed, “I am grateful to WILL for bringing this lawsuit. I will sleep better knowing that my child, and others, will be protected once MPS begins to comply with the law.” We talked with Charlene about why she's suing MPS you can hear her story here! WILL Examines New Test Scores: It's Awful for Wisconsin Students New data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) paints a dim picture for Wisconsin Students. WILL's new analysis digs into the new numbers and reveals some troubling trends. Much like the state as a whole, Milwaukee continues to see declining performance. Student performance in 4th grade reading in Wisconsin was the lowest that had been recorded since at least 1992. 4th grade math was at its lowest level since 2003. AND despite spending more than $18,000 per student, not to mention huge amounts of federal funding entering the system during the COVID-19 pandemic, student outcomes have only gotten worse. This should be a five-alarm fire for the education establishment, which is why WILL is actively sharing this information with policymakers and education stakeholders.
