When Congress returns in September, they need to be prepared to take action and replace the NAFTA with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).
NAFTA has been the law of the land for trade relations between the U.S., Mexico, and Canada since 1994, but the agreement is now antiquated, and fails to address modern issues like digital trade, intellectual property rights and cross-border data flows. President Trump has rightfully pointed out the major flaws with NAFTA and in 2017 initiated a restructuring of the trade agreement between the three nations to modernize the system and further open up Canadian and Mexican markets to U.S. agriculture. This culminated into the singing of the USMCA on November 30, 2018.
We need the Administration to conclude negotiations with Congress and submit legislative text to implement the trade agreement.
This legislation should not weaken the agreement that was put in place, there are a few policies from liberals in the House that are already concerning, like rules of origin for the automotive industry, labor standards including sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI) references, and environmental regulations.
When talking to your member of Congress about the USMCA, make sure to highlight these three key points:
- The USMCA makes necessary updates to our trade relationships with Mexico and Canada in several key ways
- The USMCA legislation making its way through Congress contains troubling language on labor and environmental standards, rules of origin for the automotive industry, and sexual-orientation and gender-identity (SOGI) references
- Congress should move quickly in passing the president’s trade agreement legislation to implement the USMCA without watering down the bill with extraneous regulations.
Congress needs to hear from us before they get back to the Hill. Tell your member of Congress that you support President Trump’s USMCA and want Congress to take up the legislation immediately!
Thank you for your activism!
