Indivisibles,
On Monday night, the Trump administration issued a broad freeze on federal
spending allocated by Congress. It was a radical act that jeopardized the
health and well-being of millions of Americans. It was also brazenly
unconstitutional and Trump’s most blatant attempt to usurp power from
Congress and put himself on the path to becoming a dictator.
Well, we weren’t going to stand by and just watch it happen. In less than
16 hours, we drove tens of thousands of calls to Congress letting
Republicans know they would be held accountable for their complicity and
pushing Democrats to shut down the Senate until Trump backed down. As
Rachel Maddow pointed out last night, that quick grassroots mobilization
helped drive a massive public backlash:

Today, that backlash paid off: The unconstitutional memo ordering the
funding freeze has been rescinded. We’ve proven today that even though
MAGA Republicans have a trifecta, their agenda is not inevitable. We can
still fight and win.
But Trump isn’t giving up, and we’re already in round two of the fight.
While the memo is rescinded, his press secretary is already saying that
the underlying efforts will continue. We have to keep up the pressure, and
we can’t do that without your support. [ [link removed] ]Chip in to help us continue
driving backlash so that we can delay, derail, and block Trump’s
autocratic agenda.

Despite the public uproar and [ [link removed] ]legal rulings over the past 24 hours,
the White House is determined to continue with the chaos, cruelty, and
unconstitutionality underlying the memo. Their statements today have been
vague and contradictory, continuing the confusion that caused so much harm
yesterday, before the freeze even went into effect.
Trump is still trying to gut the programs that millions of Americans
depend on. He will keep trying to give huge tax breaks to billionaires and
big corporations. And he’s willing to trample on the Constitution to get
it done.
But the bungled effort over the last 24 hours proves he can’t do it alone.
That’s why he nominated Russell Vought -- the architect of Project 2025
and a believer in king-like presidential power -- to run the Office of
Management and Budget. Right now, the most important thing we can do is
demand our senators fight this nomination with all they’ve got. If they
oppose Trump’s illegal and massively-harmful funding freeze, they better
not back Russell Vought -- the guy who gave Trump the idea in the first
place.
If we’re going to win, we’re going to need Democrats in Congress to act
like a real opposition party. We hope this initial victory will stiffen
their spines and encourage them to use every tool at their disposal to
defy Trump’s agenda. But we can’t count on this happening on its own. If
we want Democrats to show up as fighters, we’ll need to continue driving
calls, emails, and district office visits.
None of this work is possible without grassroots funding. [ [link removed] ]So as we
prepare for what comes next, we’re counting on folks like you pitching in
what they can to continue supporting this movement.
