Friend —

Amidst all the political news of the last few days, I wanted to reflect on the announcement that my friend Gary Peters — now Michigan’s senior senator — won’t seek re-election next year.

Gary is a public servant in every sense of the word. He’s a veteran, who served overseas as a member of the US Navy Reserve, and has been a champion for Michigan’s servicemembers in the US Senate.

As Chairman and Ranking Member on the Homeland Security Committee, and on the Armed Services Committee, he has cemented the critical role of the Northern Border Mission Center at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, ensuring that Michigan has an important and enduring role to play in our country’s national security.

In short, Gary is a true Michigander, with a no-nonsense, get-stuff-done attitude, not to mention a real passion for his Harley-Davidson.

On a personal note, Gary has also been an incredible mentor and partner to me. He was tireless on the campaign trail in 2024, both as chair of the national Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and here in Michigan — where he and his intrepid wife Colleen even joined me and Senator Debbie Stabenow on our campaign RV for a day of events.

And since I was elected, Gary has gone out of his way to welcome me to the Senate, show me the ropes, and get my office up and running.

I’ve only been here for a short time, but I can already see that Gary and Colleen, who is a force in her own right, will both be greatly missed around here.

But as Gary himself said, he’s not going anywhere over these next two years, and I’m looking forward to working together with him to deliver for Michigan.
