You've probably heard that over the past couple of days, the Office of Personnel Management – now led by two Elon Musk loyalists [1] – has emailed two million workers at agencies like the DOJ, FDA, NASA, and the CDC, pressuring them to resign. [2]

Make no mistake: this is an all-out attack on the agencies and services that millions of us depend on to protect our rights and environment, provide healthcare and housing, and so much more.  

And it’s the continuation of the extremist agenda that's dominated Trump's second term so far: decimating our government's ability to solve problems for everyday Americans so the wealthy and powerful can line their pockets. Common Cause won’t stand for it.

If there’s a theme of Donald Trump’s first 9 days as President – it’s testing the limits via chaos and confusion in an effort to break us.

On everything from freezing (then restoring) federal aid, to firing inspector generals en masse, to this new attempted purge of the federal workers that serve communities across the country, he’s brazenly violating the law and hoping nobody will stop him.

But this isn’t just some process story – for each of these illegal acts, real people will pay the price. Without government workers, we'll all see a backlog in services, assistance, and lifesaving aid that our tax dollars are paying for.

Right now, we don’t know how they decided which people or which roles to target, but it doesn’t take a genius to see what’s next. Some will take the offer (potentially endangering their pensions), and their jobs will either be filled by MAGA partisans who pass their loyalty tests, or eliminated entirely.

Unfortunately – and by design – we still don’t know the full story of what’s happened here: with yesterday’s federal aid freeze or this new attack on federal workers. But please know, your watchdogs at Common Cause are exploring our legal options to uncover the truth and stop these abuses of power.

Those actions will take time – but here’s one thing you can do right now.
