The hearing’s title is “Making Washington Work for Seniors: Fighting to End Inflation and Achieve Fiscal Sanity.” I travel across the country speaking with legions of primarily older Americans. Almost to a person, they are concerned about high prices.

And they agree on the solutions: Cracking down on corporate price gouging. Improving Social Security’s annual cost-of-living adjustments, which undermeasure seniors’ cost of living, and ensuring that they keep up with rising prices. And reducing the price of prescription drugs by expanding Medicare’s power to negotiate.

Donald Trump spent his three presidential campaigns swearing up and down that he wouldn’t cut Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid. Absolutely no one voted for cuts to Social Security, Medicare, or Medicaid.

But what Republicans are showing this week is that they will back every play Trump makes―even ones that violate the Constitution. So if Trump’s desire to pass tax cuts for his wealthy patrons collides with his promise to protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, which one do you think he’ll compromise?

Just yesterday, the Trump administration shut down Medicaid’s online payment portal. They threatened to suspend Meals on Wheels, heating assistance, and other programs seniors rely on. We fought back―and the executive order was lifted. But they will try again.
