John, I have fantastic news: President Trump just rescinded his order cutting off aid for millions of Americans [1] – after nearly 60,000 Common Cause members like you spoke out against it.
This is a major win, and it was the outcry from everyday Americans like you and me that got the job done. Together, we shut down this attempt to eliminate critical lifelines for people in need – protecting Medicaid, food assistance, cancer research, and hundreds of other programs.
Here’s why this is such a big deal, John: Trump’s entire strategy to begin his second term has been to overwhelm us with attacks. To make us feel like it’s impossible to fight back. To make us give up hope.
I'll be honest, after everything that's happened since January 20th, we could all really use a win. But a win like this is especially sweet, because it charts our path forward.
The Trump Administration overreached here, and they will again. They’re governing like they won an overwhelming mandate despite having the narrowest popular vote victory in 50 years and failing to reach a 50% majority. [2]
But from the very moment Trump announced these draconian cutbacks... more than just you, and more than just Common Cause... but millions of Americans from all walks of life sprang into action and showed this wasn't the kind of country we wanted.
They're going to try this again and again – because we know their ultimate ideological goal: to shut down our government, tear down our safety net, and turn our country into a place where everyone is out for themselves.
And those of us who believe government ought to serve the people – NOT the billionaire class – will be there to continue fighting for what’s right.
This win is a testament to the power of our collective action. And with your help, we will continue showing up to hold this administration accountable.
Thanks for all you do,
Virginia Kase Solomón, President & CEO
