Donald Trump just issued an unconstitutional order to freeze federal grants and loans, halting the disbursement of funds already approved by Congress and signed into law by President Biden.
The programs at risk are vital. Infrastructure projects could grind to a halt, leaving bridges, roads, and schools in disrepair. Housing assistance programs could collapse, leaving families without a safety net. Community health centers and education grants could be defunded, putting countless lives and futures at risk. The freeze would have devastating consequences for millions of Americans, regardless of political affiliation.
This sweeping and unprecedented freeze undermines essential programs that millions of Americans depend on, from infrastructure investments to education and public health initiatives.
Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer emphasized the stakes, saying: “Congress approved these investments and they are not optional; they are the law. These grants help people in red states and blue states, support families, help parents raise kids, and lead to stronger communities.”
Congress—not the President—holds the power of the purse. Trump’s attempt to freeze these funds is a blatant overreach, a violation of the separation of powers, and a threat to the very foundation of our democracy. He was elected President, not King, and he does not have the authority to override the will of Congress.
