Yesterday, President Trump attempted to freeze trillions of dollars in federal aid — vital funding for working families, Veterans, and Ukraine as they defend their democracy.

Look, Trump’s unilateral attempt to cut off federal aid — aid authorized by Congress to support millions of Americans — is unlawful, and thankfully, a federal judge upheld the separation of power and blocked its implementation for now.

Make no mistake — this wasn’t just about freezing aid or attempting to reduce federal spending — Trump wanted to test the limits of his power, encroaching on Congress’s authority and threatening the balance of our democracy.

This is authoritarianism in action: attempting to bypass Congress, consolidate power, and put his own agenda above the will of the people.

And while Trump is more than willing to cut funding that millions of Americans rely on, he has no problem letting his billionaire allies continue enjoying massive tax breaks.

We now know that Trump is going to use every avenue he can to usurp more and more power. But we can’t afford to let Trump’s authoritarian agenda gain ground. As a member of Congress, I have a sworn obligation to be a check on the President, and I will uphold that duty, but I cannot do it without you.
