Dear SPUC supporter,

Last week, I wrote about the “extraordinary” start to the proceedings of the Committee of MPs meeting to scrutinise Kim Leadbeater’s assisted suicide bill. As a reminder, Ms Leadbeater took a last minute decision to hold part of the session in private, was notably hostile towards Danny Kruger MP when he questioned this, and refused to countenance hearing from any additional witnesses.

The most notable moment was when the Committee voted 14 to 8 against hearing from the Royal College of Psychiatrists. However, a backlash on social media led to a U-turn, and the Committee will hear from the Royal College today. Ms Leadbeater had also resisted hearing from Disability Rights UK, and campaigners on abuse of the elderly, and has been publicly shamed into hearing them.

Kim Leadbeater has stacked her Committee with pro assisted-suicide witnesses, as well as MPs. But social media is holding her to account.

Social media also has a massive role to play in amplifying what the witnesses say. For instance, the President of the Association of Palliative Medicine making it clear that assisted dying will have a massive detrimental impact on palliative care.
Or researcher Chelsea Roff detailing her terrifying evidence about euthanasia and eating disorders.

Social media is also making sure that  people see the horrifying evidence being given by advocates for assisted death – such as this American doctor advocating making it a criminal offence to try to stop a loved one killing themselves.

You can help. Just make sure you are following SPUC on X, and repost what we’re saying on the proceedings of this Committee. We are putting up our own clips, and sharing insights from allies and experts. Please take this simple action to expose what is happening on this Committee.
