Florida. After concerns about whether

content in a textbook being used at a Florida university contained “anti-Israel bias,” Chancellor Ray Rodrigues of the State University System of Florida called on the presidents of schools in the system to look for textbooks and other educational materials that have antisemitism or anti-Israel bias. That process is now underway. There are concerns that this is too sweeping of a project, with history professor Brian Connolly saying that “if we’re going to focus on poorly written multiple-choice questions, then it’s going to take the state university system the rest of their lives to address that.”

Virginia. In other state education news, a

Virginia Senate Education subcommittee rejected a proposed bill aimed at prohibiting terrorist-connected groups and individuals from operating on Virginia college campuses. Sen. Bill Stanley proposed the bill, and defended its scope, saying “It does not shut down discourse or dialogue.” Ultimately, however, after tense discussion the subcommittee blocked the bill due to free speech concerns about its wording. Another proposed bill, intended to bar colleges and universities from accepting grants or partnerships with foreign countries, was also rejected based on worries about enforcement and unintended consequences.

Rochester. On the first day of classes,

a small group of masked students at the University of Rochester staged an unauthorized protest, calling for actions that included an arms embargo on Israel and the lifting of the Gaza blockade. Framed as a response to the university’s disciplining of students involved in ‘wanted’ posters targeting pro-Israel advocates, the demonstrators used the Israel-Hamas ceasefire as a platform to amplify their rhetoric, referring to the conflict in inflammatory terms. The unregistered protest disrupted campus spaces and flouted university policies.

Avi Kaner, a co-owner of the NYC supermarket chain Morton Williams has chosen to redirect giving specifically to Columbia University’s Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies instead of to a more general university fund he had previously donated to as an alum. Kaner also noted that after anti-Israel groups at the school targeted the grocery chain's Columbia location with protests and calls for a boycott, “that has made us double down on items imported from Israel.”

Ireland. Trinity College Dublin is under fire once again as student BDS activists staged a dramatic protest, accusing the university of violating its commitment to shun Israel. Banners declaring

“We are still watching” and “TCD still funds genocide” were displayed on campus in response to a €1,836 payment to an Israeli company for research supplies. Despite explaining the purchase was unintentional and cutting ties with the company, the administration rushed to further appease BDS activists, holding an emergency meeting and promising stricter procurement rules. The protesters, unsatisfied, now demand “reparative action” and threaten further demonstrations.

Events held at these campuses and around the world highlighted that International Holocaust Remembrance Day is not just about reflecting on the past; it’s a call to action for the future. It reminds us of our shared responsibility to stand against hate, foster empathy, and champion justice.
