John —
On Monday night, President Trump’s Office of Management and Budget released a memo ordering all funding for “grant, loan and other financial assistance programs” to be paused. It’s hard to tell exactly what funds are frozen, but I can tell you this:
I have heard from folks in every corner of Arizona — mayors, county supervisors, community organizations, business owners, and everyday Arizonans — who are worried about how this is going to impact them.
This order was written so broadly, so carelessly, that up to $3 trillion in government support for working families, veterans, small businesses, police, firefighters, and more are at risk. It threatens things like cancer research, Meals on Wheels, food assistance for hungry kids and seniors, Head Start child care programs, housing for homeless veterans. Millions of Americans could be harmed by President Trump’s recklessness.
Beyond all that, this is almost certainly an unconstitutional power grab. Congress approved the funding for these programs, and the administration’s role is to execute them. This is Article One of the Constitution, folks. It is the foundation of our system of government, and states and organizations around the country are already filing lawsuits.
But I want to focus on this team right now — what you can do to help as we fight back. And the most important thing, really, is that you add your voice. The more people who hear about this overreach, the more who speak out, the better we can all push back.
Thanks for your help, John. We’ll have more soon.
