Today, the Trump administration unlawfully blocked thousands of federal programs across the board.
Although a judge has delayed that policy’s implementation, this move highlights the real harm that’s caused when our leaders ignore their oath to the Constitution to push through their policies.
This wasn’t just a bureaucratic decision for policy nerds to debate – it had an immediate effect in Michigan.
My office immediately started receiving an influx of questions from local leaders from both parties, facilities that care for veterans and nursing homes, university leaders, farmers, members of the armed forces, even cancer patients whose clinical trials were halted, all alarmed at the possibility that their programs and grants could be coming to a stop.
I respect that any administration gets to propose their vision for the federal budget. But every administration is also bound by the Constitution, which gives Congress—not the executive branch—the power to appropriate funds.
With so much on the line for real people, now is the time for each administration official to honor the oath they swore to uphold. Michiganders and people across the country are feeling the pain. Cutting things like funding for veterans is the definition of throwing the baby out with the bathwater.
