15 years ago this month, the Supreme Court issued its ruling in Citizens
United v. FEC — a landmark case that upended century-old campaign finance
restrictions and enabled corporations and outside groups to spend
unlimited resources on elections.
The result? ⬇️
While the ultra rich and special interests have long had an outsized
influence in our elections, the Court’s 2010 ruling decisively titled
political influence toward wealthy donors and mega corporations.
Perhaps the most significant outcome of the case has been the
proliferation of super PACs — which empower the wealthiest donors and the
expansion of dark money through shadowy nonprofits that don’t disclose
their donors.
In this past election cycle, we saw the huge role big money played. Elon
Musk, for example, became the single largest donor of the 2024 cycle,
spending at least $277 million to back Donald Trump and other MAGA
conservatives. Conversely, despite record grassroots fundraising, Vice
President Kamala Harris and Democrats fell short.
