Kathy Slochul's Dismal State of the State
On January 14th Governor Hochul delivered her vision for New York State, which included almost nothing to address the climate crisis. She put off her signature Cap and Invest program for months and perhaps a year. The Cap and Invest program, if done well, would drive down greenhouse gas emissions while raising revenue for climate action. Draft regulations were expected this month with the program going into effect by the summer. She claimed she would nonetheless spend $1B on "climate" but in truth this will be spent as $200m/year in each of 5 years, which is hardly anything. Additionally, it's worth noting that NYS's HEAP program, which helps low-income New Yorkers pay heating bills, has just run out of money. All the more reason to go all out for the NY HEAT Act!

Align your money with your values
Did you know that the largest part of most people's carbon footprint comes from their bank account and investments? The six largest U.S. banks: Chase, Bank of America, Citi, Wells Fargo, Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, loaned more than $1.8 trillion for fossil fuel industry expansion from 2016 to 2023. Investing in Climate Chaos reports that Vanguard, BlackRock, State Street and Capital Group are the largest investors in fossil fuels. Learn how to move your finances out of the fossil fuel industry and into investments that align with your values. Sign up here to join the workshop on Tuesday, Feb. 25th at 7 PM led by GreenFaith financial expert Michael Richardson.
Power Hour: your questions answered!
Q: I've never called my elected officials before. What do I say?
A: Introduce yourself and say that you are a constituent, and politely make a specific request of the elected official, such as to cosponsor and pass a particular piece of climate legislation. Join Power Hour on Mondays at noon - we will give you a suggested script and a briefing on the policy that we want our legislators to pass, and we can coach you through the process of making your first phone calls. We get results!
