Dear John,
If this were any other year, today would be our annual Giving Day. But this is no ordinary day, and it’s certainly not an ordinary year!
Thanks to you, every day has been giving day lately. So we thought we’d flip the script and make this a Giving Back Day — by sharing our deep and heartfelt gratitude for all you and your fellow hunger heroes have done to help hungry kids.
Thanks to you and so many kind people, we’ve provided $13.3 million in emergency grant funding to 569 schools and community groups in all 50 states, plus DC. These grants will help programs serve as many as 8.5 million healthy meals a day during this crisis.
And behind all those stats are thousands of heartwarming stories. Here are just two.
In Hammond, Indiana, a No Kid Hungry grant is providing meals to up to 2,400 kids a day. Christine Clarahan, the school district’s food services director shared her appreciation:
"I don't think I even have the words to say how grateful I am, because I'll just start crying."
In Florida, grants and technical support helped Orlando restaurateur John Rivers turn his BBQ joints into food factories for hungry kids. The Orlando model has been so successful, plans are in place to replicate the initiative state-wide.
Rivers told us, with a gleam in his eye, that the kids make the effort worthwhile.
"The kids are so excited when the food comes in. Last Saturday this little girl with pigtails was singing a song. All operations stopped, and we got to listen. And this one cute, patient grandma, she wanted to get out of the car and hug us. Just stuck in my heart."
John, you made these — and many other — stories possible. That makes you a hunger hero in our eyes.
With support from people like you, No Kid Hungry has been working to end childhood hunger in America for years before the coronavirus struck. And we will continue long after the pandemic is over — until no child in our country will ever wonder where their next meal is coming from.
You’ve done a wonderful thing. And I can’t thank you enough.
