CUP OF JOE
August 17, 2019
Newsletter
It’s been a busy seven days - from the Iowa State Fair in Des Moines and the 1st Congressional District Passport to Victory event in Central City through parades and county and local Democratic Party gatherings in Iowa, all the way to a great Cup of Joe on the Issues forum in Corning, Iowa.
And lots of great press besides!
My grassroots team - leafleting Iowa!
I couldn’t do any of this without my staff and volunteers.
They’re the ones who organize my events, get me where I need to go, get me on TV and radio and in the press, and make sure everything runs smoothly.
They’re also working hard to make sure as many people as possible hear my message. I run in every parade I can, and attend every event I can - but without my staff and volunteers, I couldn’t reach nearly as many people.
We do politics the old-fashioned way - with leaflets and handshakes. Now we’ve given out over 100,000 brochures. And people are starting to notice…

Iowa State Fair
The State Fair is one of the great events of the summer here in Iowa. I was able to meet the Drake University women’s soccer team for a chat on cancer, and had a walk-around with the American Wind Energy Association - check out my Twitter, Instagram and Facebook for more pictures.
I also spoke at the Des Moines Register Soapbox - where I talked about why I’m running, my decades of service to this country and what I learned about accountability from it. Watch the whole 20-minute speech below.

Cup of Joe on the Issues, Corning, Iowa – agriculture and “training for a lifetime”
Corning, Iowa, hosted our fourth “Cup of Joe on the Issues” event - on agriculture, food, and how we can train our workforce for a lifetime.
We talked about the fact that America spends less on workforce training than any other developed country - and why that has to change if we want to help our farmers and rural communities face the challenges of tomorrow. If you’d like to read more on my plans for “training for a lifetime” please read my policy paper here.

Vox called me a “maverick” and said”He’s an anti-establishment Democrat who has beaten a Republican in a Republican district, he’s someone with military and foreign policy experience, and he has a deeply personal reason for his approach to health care reform: This is his record and he’s running on it.” You can read the full profile here.

I’ll be speaking at events across Iowa, from a town hall in Des Moines on Saturday, August 17th, and the 7-County Democratic Rally and Fundraiser in Otley on the 18th, through local Democratic Party events to the Iowa AFL-CIO. I’ll also be traveling to San Francisco for the Democratic National Committee’s summer meeting, where I’ll be speaking. You can get updates by signing up for our emails on our website or checking out our events page. We hope to see you at one of our events soon!
