As the political winds shift with a return of a Trump administration, so too does the messaging from social media giant Meta. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg recently announced [ [link removed] ] a major change to the platform’s content moderation and fact-checking approach. Instead of relying on an external fact-checking organization, Meta will now adopt a model similar to X’s Community Notes [ [link removed] ], which allows users to flag potentially misleading posts, with additional layers of peer review. Unlike third-party fact-checkers, this user-driven approach could increase transparency, but it also raises concerns about misinformation and accountability.
This shift is undoubtedly a strategic move for Meta to curry favor with the political party in power. It mirrors previous actions, such as Meta’s response to the 2020 election and its subsequent censorship of misinformation related to COVID-19, which appeared to align with public and governmental pressures. The recent announcement signaled a new era of content moderation for Meta—one that will place a larger emphasis on transparency and consumer involvement. Hopefully, this will improve the information consumers receive so that they’re equipped to make more informed decisions about their own usage of the platform.
More importantly, this announcement poses crucial questions about the role of social media platforms in content moderation: How much should platforms regulate content, and what role should the government play? While it will be interesting to watch these conversations unfold, the power must ultimately remain in the hands of consumers. Platforms are businesses, and consumers must be equipped with the right information to decide which ones to use.
Meta’s Historic Relationship with the White House
Zuckerberg’s recent announcement echoes language President Trump has used [ [link removed] ] to discuss the issue, particularly around free speech, free expression and censorship. The political connotations, coupled with timing, suggest that Meta is making an effort to align itself more closely with the new president, with which its relations have historically been tense.
And this isn’t the first time Meta has responded to pressure from the White House. Last summer, Zuckerberg sent a letter [ [link removed] ] to the House Judiciary Committee chair, Republican Jim Jordan, accusing the Biden administration of pressuring Meta to censor certain COVID-19 content during the pandemic. As the new Trump administration takes power, Meta’s shift can be seen within the larger context of the evolving social media landscape. Trump has forged a close relationship with X owner Elon Musk, which all but ensures that X will be viewed favorably by his supporters. He launched his own social media platform, Truth Social, which touts “free speech” as its core value. And at the writing of this article, Trump has said he will “most likely” support a reprieve [ [link removed] ] for TikTok against a potential ban, and the platform is comforting U.S. users [ [link removed] ] with the potential of this protection under the Trump administration.
Meta’s tendency to adjust its stance based on political shifts seems to reflect its broader strategy. The platform tends to gauge the political temperature and project an image that will benefit the company based on the current political conditions, whether it fully complies with content moderation pressures from the government or not. But this, too, is common among major businesses. For example, Kroger grocery stores seemingly abandoned dynamic pricing models [ [link removed] ] when facing political and public pressure as inflation heated up last fall.
The fact that we expect social media platforms to be unbiased, neutral spaces is a mischaracterization of what these spaces are. They are, after all, businesses, and their moderation policies are not immune to the influence of political and market forces.
Social Media as Just Another Media
Perhaps our perception of social media is outdated. When social media first emerged, it was seen as an extension of in-person relationships. But as influencer culture grew, individuals on these platforms began to build large followings, driving business deals and shaping consumer behavior.
Today, top creators have millions of followers—often surpassing the viewership [ [link removed] ] of traditional media outlets. Social media has become a multi-channel media platform controlled by individual creators but owned by the platforms, and we must reconsider how we view these platforms.
Under this model, social media platforms have the right to moderate content—just as CNN and Fox News do. Just as these traditional media outlets determine which experts to feature or what shows to air, social media platforms can exercise discretion over what content is allowed. Platforms depend on user-generated content, but that doesn’t mean they must accept every post. Consumers have the choice to engage with or ignore content, just as they do with traditional media.
The Problem of Government Censorship
The most pressing issue in the content moderation debate is the role of government. How much influence should the government have over the content moderation policies of social media platforms? These platforms host user-generated content and discussions, and for years, they have dedicated substantial resources to policing this content, both to maintain public approval and to satisfy the demands of elected officials.
This issue has gained even more traction as discussions around protecting minors have intensified. While this is undoubtedly an important issue, we must be cautious about where the responsibility lies.
Government attempts to regulate tech companies have often been fraught with missteps —just listen to the debates about Section 230 [ [link removed] ]. These attempts highlight how policymakers struggle to keep pace with the rapid evolution of technology. Government regulation can have unintended consequences, such as stifling innovation or infringing on free speech.
Policymakers are often ill-equipped to understand the nuances of social media platforms. For instance, when lawmakers questioned Mark Zuckerberg [ [link removed] ] about Facebook’s business model in 2018, they failed to grasp how Facebook could be free for users and still generate revenue. If they cannot even understand the basics of social media platforms, how can we expect them to craft effective, forward-thinking policy?
Greater Transparency Over Content Regulation
When users engage with platforms, they enter into a sort of social contract. In exchange for their data—such as demographic and interest information—users gain access to post, consume and engage with content. They can interact with their favorite creators and produce content themselves.
This social contract is not only a transaction of data for content access, but also an agreement about how content is moderated. If users feel that this contract is being violated—whether through a lack of transparency or unjust moderation—they should have the option to switch platforms or demand clearer, fairer policies.
If consumers are concerned about the rules governing content moderation—what creators can post and what is deemed acceptable—it is their right to demand transparency. The most reasonable demand from users is for platforms to explain their rules and clarify what constitutes a violation.
Policy vs. Consumer Choice

Educated users should understand that the content they see is curated based on algorithms and proprietary platform policies—whether harmless or otherwise.
Moreover, algorithms are not neutral. They are designed to prioritize engagement, often amplifying sensational or divisive content. Transparency in how these algorithms operate is essential for users to make informed decisions about the platforms they choose to use.
Ultimately, consumers must retain the greatest control in their relationship with social media platforms. Any government policy or regulation should ensure that users retain the ability to make their own choices.
As discussions around protecting minors continue to evolve, parents must be empowered to make decisions that are best for their children. While some argue that government intervention is necessary to protect minors, we must be cautious not to set a precedent for overreach that stifles innovation and curtails free speech.
Many of the current and proposed policies put minors’ data at risk and could have unintended consequences, as age-verification requirements can make users’ data valuable and vulnerable targets [ [link removed] ]. The best outcomes will occur when parents are directly involved in guiding their children's online behavior, helping them develop into responsible young adults who can navigate the digital world.
Content moderation rightly belongs in the hands of platforms. When these policies are communicated transparently to consumers, users are empowered to choose the platforms that best align with their values. Meta’s announcement, while perhaps politically motivated, will shed greater light on the platform’s content moderation policies and provide important information for consumers to consider when deciding which platforms to use. Competition will arise as users demand alternatives, and platforms will continue to thrive as businesses while fostering responsible content creation.
In the end, the future of content moderation hinges on transparency, consumer choice and the responsibility of platforms to respect their users’ needs. While government regulation may play a role, it is consumers who must retain the power to choose which platforms align with their values. Meta’s announcement provides important information for consumers to consider and decide if the platform resonates with their beliefs. Meta and other social media platforms must be held accountable by consumers for how they exercise discretion over content.
