Hi team,
I'm Mike Young, Executive Director at California Environmental Voters—but I'm writing to you today as a resident of Los Angeles.
The start of this year has been horrific for our community. Unprecedented wildfires in L.A. have turned entire neighborhoods and communities into ash and dust–in the middle of our rainy season! This is not normal. It's the result of unnaturally dry and warm weather creating year-round wildfire conditions.
For decades, fossil fuel companies have driven the climate crisis, generating environmental disasters that devastate California's communities with billions of dollars in damages. And right now, Californians are paying the price with skyrocketing insurance costs.
That's why the Affordable Insurance and Climate Recovery Act is critical to California's future.
Senator Scott Wiener (a member of the 2021 EnviroVoters Climate Caucus!) introduced the Affordable Insurance and Climate Recovery Act (SB 222) today, with five members of the EnviroVoters Climate Caucus included in the group of co-authors. This bill will force the fossil fuel companies who are driving the climate crisis to pay their fair share of insurance costs, stabilizing California's insurance market and protecting the victims of climate disasters.

California is on the front lines of the climate crisis. We've seen it recently in Los Angeles, but it's been happening for years statewide. Insurers know the risks that the climate crisis poses—that's why they've raised prices and canceled insurance policies for millions of homeowners in California.
The Affordable Insurance and Climate Recovery Act will let victims of unnatural disasters recover damages from polluters, making insurance more affordable for Californians like you and me. This is the kind of bold climate action California needs to create justice for victims of unnatural disasters and long-overdue accountability for polluters.
We'll be sharing updates with you via email and on our social media profiles ([link removed]) to keep you posted on the progress of this bill throughout the legislative session.
Thank you for being a part of this movement,
Mike Young
