SCOTUS won’t review Mississippi’s Jim Crow-era felony disenfranchisement law
* The U.S. Supreme Court declined ([link removed]) to hear a Mississippi case challenging a lifetime voting ban on people with certain felony convictions. Previously, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ban as constitutional, rejecting 8th Amendment claims and ruling against voting advocates.
* This is not the first time the justices have refused to consider the issue of felony disenfranchisement in Mississippi. In June 2023, the Court decided ([link removed]) not to review a different case challenging the state constitution’s felony disenfranchisement provision.

The Supreme Court could gut access to birth control this year

4th Circuit hears North Carolina Supreme Court race lawsuit
* The 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals heard ([link removed]) oral argument today over whether Jefferson Griffin's challenge to over 60,000 ballots in the North Carolina Supreme Court race should remain in federal or state court. The election is the last uncertified 2024 race in the country.
* “For years, Republicans in our state have rolled back voting rights because they fear the will of the voters, and when they can't get enough votes to win legitimately, they try to seize the levers of power through other means and rig the system,” Rep. Deborah Ross (D-N.C.) said at a press conference this morning.

Voters seek to prevent noncitizens from being excluded from 2030 census
* Five voters in California and Texas filed ([link removed]) a motion in federal court to defend noncitizens after four GOP states sued the federal government to exclude larger categories of immigrants from the census count and add a citizenship question to the 2030 census.
