John — In just two days, as a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, I will vote on the nomination of Pam Bondi. Here are some thoughts…

Earlier this month, I had the opportunity to ask Attorney General nominee Pam Bondi some questions.

Her answers were not just disappointing — they were downright disqualifying for someone who wants to be the top law enforcement officer in the country.

When asked whether she could acknowledge that President Trump lost in 2020, she apparently could not.

When asked whether she would preserve the evidence gathered by the Justice Department in the January 6 insurrection investigation, she would not commit to doing so.

When asked whether she would come after Trump’s opponents with the powers of the Justice Department — something he has repeatedly threatened to do — her answer was evasive and unconvincing.

John, Pam Bondi has not demonstrated that she will be an Attorney General for the American people, placing her loyalty to the Constitution and her oath of office over her fidelity to Donald Trump. That’s not just a conflict of interest — that’s a danger to our democracy because it means that she will be less focused on attacking crime and potentially more focused on attacking Trump’s perceived enemies.

I believe that each appointee deserves the opportunity to come before Senate committees and answer our questions. We gave Pam Bondi that opportunity — but her answers proved to me that she is unwilling to stand up to Donald Trump when she is asked to contravene the law and Constitution.
