Team — here’s what’s going on with birthright citizenship:
First, on Day One of his second term, Donald Trump signed an executive order revoking birthright citizenship — a unilateral attempt to completely rewrite the definition of citizenship in the Constitution.
Then, a federal judge temporarily blocked Trump’s order, calling it “blatantly unconstitutional.”
Now, we need to speak out to show that Americans will not stand for this attack on our country’s values — or our Constitution.

Birthright citizenship was added to our Constitution with the passage of the 14th Amendment after the Civil War — it was meant to correct the Supreme Court’s 1857 Dred Scott decision, a ruling that held that African Americans, even those born free in the United States, could never be American citizens.
Now, Trump is acting directly contrary to the plain meaning of the Constitution — and is attempting to move the U.S. back to a pre-civil war mentality where certain kinds of people are viewed as subordinate and unequal because of their parents' status or ancestry.
If you agree with Tim Kaine that we can’t stand by quietly while Trump attacks birthright citizenship, please add your name today to say you support it. [[link removed]]
