ACLU Supporter, only hours into his second term as president, Donald Trump issued an executive order seeking to end birthright citizenship for certain U.S.-born babies – a massive violation of our fundamental Constitutional rights and an extreme attack on immigrant communities. Within two hours, the ACLU filed a lawsuit charging the Trump administration with defying the Constitution and long-standing Supreme Court precedent. Trump's order seeks to create a permanent subclass of people born in the U.S. who are denied full rights as Americans: a class that is deprived of the basic right to vote, serve on juries, hold certain jobs, and be a full member of American society. We won't let him – but we can't do it without you. While our lawyers fight in court, join us in telling Congress to protect birthright citizenship.
Every attack on citizenship by birth, from the 19th century until now, has been grounded in racism. Guaranteeing not only birthright citizenship, but equal rights to all citizens and equal protection of the laws to all persons under U.S. jurisdiction, the 14th Amendment is a direct response to Civil War-era attempts to restrict formerly enslaved people from becoming U.S. citizens. No politician gets to decide who among those born in our country is "worthy" of citizenship. While we fight this unconstitutional, destructive order in court, we're glad to have you with us. Thank you for fighting alongside us, The ACLU Team |
