Hi John,
President Trump’s brutal first week in office was full of orders that trample human rights and democracy ([link removed]) . And late Friday night, he doubled down on his administration’s anti-abortion policies by taking three incredibly harmful actions ([link removed]) :
1. Reinstating the Global Gag Rule. This policy prohibits non-U.S. organizations that receive U.S. global health funds from engaging in abortion-related work—even if they’re using their own funds. They are “gagged” from providing not only abortion services, but abortion counseling, referrals, medical advice, training and advocacy.

2. Rejoining the Geneva Consensus Declaration. This non-binding manifesto was designed under the first Trump Administration and launched at the end of 2020, bringing together a global coalition of anti-rights governments that oppose sexual and reproductive health and rights and LGBTQ+ rights.

3. Strengthening the Hyde Amendment. This policy bars the use of U.S. federal funds for abortion in the U.S. The Biden Administration took actions to define abortion as health care and expand access for people in the U.S. despite the Hyde Amendment, but President Trump has rescinded those actions.

These three actions by President Trump add up to an unprecedented assault on the reproductive rights and bodily autonomy of people in the U.S. and around the world. Trump and his allies not only want to deny people control over their own bodies and lives, but they also want to scare us all into silence.

We at Ipas have always spoken out for abortion rights—and that certainly won’t change now. No matter what, Ipas will remain a bold and unapologetic voice for the human right to abortion access and to determine one’s own future. We won’t be gagged, scared or intimidated. And we will speak up and speak out when others cannot or will not.

Ipas has never received any funding from the U.S. government—and we never will. But we work with many local partners who do. We stand in solidarity with them and will work to reduce the harmful impact of these U.S. policies on all who are affected.

We are as committed as ever to our mission, and to a future where every person has the reproductive health care they need.
