There’s been an incredibly tragic, largely unseen consequence of the nationwide lockdown: because children are home more and gun sales are up, the country has seen a spike in unintentional shootings by children in March and April.
It’s an unimaginable scenario -- but unfortunately, also just more of what we’ve been seeing even before shelter-in-place orders took effect. 4.6 million minors live in homes with unlocked, loaded guns. Now more than ever, it’s time to ensure those children are protected.
Polls show that the vast majority of Americans want a locked gun mandate. But so far, only 11 states have passed any kind of safe storage law. That means, in most of the country, this problem is set to continue or even get worse.
Special interest groups like the NRA shouldn’t get to override the will of the American people and the safety of American children. It’s time for decisive action.
