The American Medical Association (AMA) just pulled out of the Partnership for America’s Health Care Future, the lobbying group big pharma, big hospitals and big insurers created last year to stop our momentum towards Medicare For All.
They’re spending millions to convince Americans that universal health care would be bad for them.
People’s Action members won’t be fooled: not now, not ever. Join our fight!
In April, a thousand of us showed up at the PAHCF’s offices in Washington, D.C. to deliver this simple message.
“We’re here because we’ve had enough,” wrote George Goehl and Maria Elena Letona, board president of People’s Action Institute, in a letter they delivered to the group. “We’re calling on PAHCF to immediately cease and desist from all attempts to undermine Medicare For All, and join us in the fight to ensure that health care is a right for everyone.”
In June, we turned up the heat. People’s Action members, seniors, doctors and medical students, took over the AMA’s annual convention in Chicago. We demanded the AMA end their opposition to Medicare For All.
“Most were seniors like me – some in wheelchairs – each of whom has their own painful experiences to share of being denied care when we needed it most.” said Reggie Griffin, a 78-year-old member of the Jane Addams Senior Caucus, who participated in the “die-in.”
Someone at the AMA must be listening, because they just dropped out of the PAHCF.
People’s Action welcomes the AMA’s change of heart, but we’re doubling down. Because we know our work is far from over.
In coming weeks, you’ll see more actions by People’s Action around the country as we turn up the heat even higher to demand Medicare For All.
We're glad the AMA has finally seen the light, and stepped aside in the best interest of patients and physicians. But we won't rest until everyone has the health care we all need and deserve: Medicare For All.
