I want to share a bit about myself and why this fight is so personal. I was born and raised in Michigan, the daughter of a public school teacher and union leader, and my family instilled in me the value of civic engagement from an early age. At 18, I ran for and won a seat on my hometown school board because I was determined to ensure young voices were heard. Since then, I have spent more than 20 years advancing progress in state legislatures —serving as caucus director for the Michigan Senate, working in the Michigan legislature, and most recently leading the state and local campaigns team at EMILYs List, where I was proud to help elect hundreds of Democratic pro-choice women.
Like many of you, I have felt the weight of this past week, but I have also never been more convinced of our power to push back and create progress for our communities. From defending reproductive freedom to protecting our environment, improving education, and building communities that reflect our shared values, I have seen how meaningful change is possible at the state level.
That’s why I am so proud to join Sister District, a community with a proven track record of turning dedication into real results. I find it incredibly inspiring to see the results of this community’s hard work—like winning 30 races in 9 key states, raising over $2 million for candidates and community-based organizations, and reaching out to 2 million voters in 2024 alone. I encourage you to read our 2024 Impact Report for yourself and celebrate these victories with us!
Thank you for welcoming me to Sister District. I am so grateful to stand alongside you in this fight.
Onward,
Sarah Curmi
Executive Director, Sister District
