Between the devastating fires raging in Southern California and Trump’s first reckless acts as president, it’s easy to feel discouraged, John. But in moments like this, I remind myself that there’s immense power when people come together to demand change.

Over the years, my activism has taken me to some unexpected places — courtrooms, Congress, the White House, and even jail cells. I’ve been arrested, shouted at, and dismissed more times than I can count. But through it all, I’ve kept going, because I believe we can leave the world better than we found it.

That belief is what kept me going in moments like this:

And it’s that same belief that led me to climate activism.

I’ll never forget one morning, years ago, when I woke up to skies stained red-brown due to nearby wildfires. I felt a deep sense of grief as I saw the damage. Even the birds were dying from it.

It became crystal clear to me that the problem of climate change is too big and too complex to fight alone. That’s what motivated me to rally others and help build a movement to tackle this crisis.

One of the turning points in my journey came when I read On Fire by Naomi Klein. The science was undeniable: the climate crisis is here, and we have limited time to prevent full-blown climate catastrophe. So I reached out to Annie Leonard at Greenpeace USA, and together we soon launched Fire Drill Fridays. What started with an act of civil disobedience grew into a nationwide movement with thousands of people demanding action.

As public support for climate action grew over the years, the actual policies we needed seemed to lose steam due to inaction from politicians on both sides of the aisle. It became clear to me that we not only need to raise hell, we need systemic change. That means changing policies at every level of government. And to change policies, we need leaders who aren’t beholden to corporate polluters — especially Big Oil.

That’s why, in 2022, I started JanePAC to defeat the political allies of the fossil fuel industry and elect climate champions at every level of government.

I am beyond proud of what we’ve accomplished together since then. But we’re just getting started — and we need you involved.
