Dear friends and partners,
As nearly all LAUSD schools reopened following the devastating wildfires, we are working tirelessly to ensure the health and safety of our kids, support our communities, and navigate the road ahead. Every campus has been deep-cleaned, and we’ve worked with environmental experts and medical professionals to institute a range of safety measures to protect students, staff, and families.
This week, I visited kids in classrooms at the local middle and elementary schools that just reopened after a week of virtual instruction. And we continue to support the two elementary schools that were relocated to new, temporary campuses after theirs were irreparably burned. We were grateful to Governor Newsom for coming to see this relocation effort and discuss how the State can best support LAUSD in our short- and long-term recovery efforts. I continue to join town halls and meet with families daily to work with our communities on a safe and supportive return to school.
While most kids were able to return to campus this week, the Pali High community began virtual instruction. We are actively working to help the school secure temporary space so students can return to in-person learning as quickly as possible, and I am committed to ensuring the District’s full support to repair the damaged portions of their campus.
Lastly, after this week’s presidential inauguration, the new administration wasted no time rolling back vital protections for countless vulnerable populations, including immigrant communities. I want to reiterate that our schools will remain welcoming, safe spaces for students, families, and staff of all backgrounds and identities. We will continue to stand firm and fight back against any policies that seek to instill fear or cause harm to our school communities.
As we navigate these challenging times, I am inspired by the resilience of our communities and the outpouring of kindness and support we have seen. Together, we will rebuild, recover, and continue to make our schools places where every child can thrive.
Onward,
