Despite promises to leave abortion to the states, Republicans are using President Trump's first week in office to attack access to reproductive health care. On Thursday, I voted against a bill to criminalize abortion providers, ignore medical experts, and allow politicians to intervene in family medical decisions. This bill purports to prevent infanticide, but in reality it is a cynical and unnecessary attempt to intimidate health care providers out of providing reproductive care. Doctors are already required to provide appropriate medical care during an abortion, and infanticide is already illegal in every state. Instead, this bill threatens criminal prosecutions for health care workers and forces them to act against their medical judgment.
I am proud to be a member of the Reproductive Freedom Caucus and I will always stand up for families' rights to access the care they need.
