Now that Republicans control the House of Representatives, the Senate, and the White House, they can revisit their anti-voter wish list and advance bills they hadn’t been able to pass before.

One example is the so-called “SAVE Act.”

Let’s be clear: this legislation is a disinformation-hyping distraction from any actual efforts to improve the voting process.

Republicans falsely claim they need to pass it to prevent non-citizens from voting in federal elections — which is already against the law.

In reality, they use bills like this to spread disinformation about immigrants voting illegally, because that lays the groundwork to question election results. And this bill would add red tape to the voter registration process by forcing people to show a passport or birth certificate. Most American adults don’t have a current passport, and the Brennan Center estimates that these requirements could disenfranchise millions of eligible voters by forcing them to spend extra time and money to exercise a basic right.

As new anti-voter legislation is introduced and voter suppression tactics spread across our nation, the MAGA plan is blatantly obvious: restrict the freedom to vote so they can cling to power.

Last year, the Republican House passed the SAVE Act, but it couldn’t get through the Democratic Senate, and President Biden said he would have vetoed it even if it had.

But Trump is a big fan. Last July, he sounded off on social media: “Republicans must pass the Save Act, or go home and cry yourself to sleep.” And Elon Musk had this to say about the SAVE Act: “Those who oppose this are traitors. All Caps: TRAITORS. What is the penalty for traitors again?”

We have to be ready for Trump and his far-right allies to keep on attacking voting rights with plans like the SAVE Act.
