Friend,
Last Monday, shortly before the inauguration ceremony, I went to the supermarket to buy some groceries for our family. A dozen eggs at our local market cost $10.99.
President Trump rode into office on big promises to bring costs down and help families struggling to get by.
So one might expect his first few actions in the Oval Office to make good on those promises.
Instead, we got executive orders to withdraw from the World Health Organization and the Paris Climate Accords.
We saw insurrectionists who beat and assaulted police officers get full presidential pardons.
Corporations were given a huge gift when Trump pulled out of a global agreement requiring them to pay fair taxes across all of the countries they operate in.
And of course, Trump tried to make an end run around the Constitution by saying that the 14th Amendment does not actually say “All persons born or naturalized in the United States…are citizens of the United States” even though it most certainly and clearly does.
None of this is going to make life better for people who are struggling. None of this will usher in the age of American greatness that Trump promised us in his inaugural address.
So what do we do?
One takeaway for me from last year’s election was that while not all Trump voters support his MAGA/crypto-bro/tech-oligarchy agenda, many feel like government has continually failed them, and they are clamoring for real effective governance.
I’m always going to fight the nonsense and absurdities coming out of the federal government. But as I head back to Albany this year, I will continue working to make sure government is working for you. For all of us. I want us to do the big things that will fundamentally make people’s lives better and I want us to do the little things that just make things work for you and your families.
We’re going to fight but we’re also going to lead. That’s my commitment to you all who put your trust in me.
Stay warm, stay focused, and together, we’ll get through this.
