Today is International Day of Education, an exceptionally important day to remember the millions of children who cannot go to school — and the people who are working to change that — which is why I am reaching out to you.
We know that a brighter future starts with an education — providing children with the skills and resources they need to live fulfilling lives and find success for themselves and their communities.
Yet, violent conflict, climate-related disaster, persistent poverty, and exorbitant school fees prevent more than 250 million students from accessing an education.
Thanks to compassionate supporters like you, Mercy Corps works to keep children in school around the globe. Our programs also find creative ways of teaching for children who are impacted by conflict, disaster, and more. Here are a few examples of this work:
In Ukraine, where the ongoing war has kept young children out of school for nearly three years, Mercy Corps’ support enabled a children’s community center to purchase new carpet for their space, a generator for electricity and heat, a smartboard, several games, and other necessary equipment.
In rural Guatemala, where economic opportunities are scarce for young women, Mercy Corps provides business and financial training to help community youth develop skills, access resources, and create a better life.
In Timor Leste, Mercy Corps provides training sessions to teachers and faculty focusing on nutritional foods that strengthen, protect, and encourage growth in children. With this knowledge, teachers educate their students about nutrition and ensure school meals are full of nourishment.
Across the globe, Mercy Corps teams are working to ensure that children and adolescents have access to education. With your support, our teams are rebuilding schools damaged by conflict, helping young girls — who are disproportionately kept out of the classroom — find ways to get back and stay in school, and providing training for young adolescents to learn a trade or start a business.
On International Day of Education, we are grateful for your generosity that powers our efforts to help educate kids around the world.
But more help is needed to shape the future of countless children in crisis areas. Learn more about how many children and adolescents do not have access to education worldwide and how Mercy Corps teams are addressing it.
Thank you,
The Mercy Corps team
