Email from Rep. Nehls President Trump is sworn in as 47th President   Greetings! I wanted to take a moment to share with you a recap of what happened last week in Texas' 22nd District and the United States House of Representatives. Monday, January 20, 2025, was a great day in our country. Donald J. Trump was sworn in as our 47th President and J.D. Vance was sworn in as our 50th Vice President. The days of America's decline are over, and the Golden Age of America has begun. With a Republican trifecta, meaning the Republican Party has the majority in the House and Senate and control of the White House, I will tirelessly work with my colleagues and the Trump Administration to reverse the disastrous policies that have plagued our country for the last four years. We will secure our borders, lower inflation, unleash American energy dominance, and reassert strength on the world stage. This Week in Washington, D.C. Reps. Troy E. Nehls, Chris Pappas, and Senator Ted Cruz Reintroduce the Medal of Honor Act The Medal of Honor is the United States’ highest military award. Army Private Jacob Parrott was given the first Medal of Honor in 1863. Since then, there have been 3,515 Medal of Honor recipients, with 61 currently living. Currently, our nation’s Medal of Honor recipients receive a special pension equating to just $1,406.73 per month or $16,880.76 annually. This week, I reintroduced the bipartisan, bicameral Medal of Honor Act with Congressman Chris Pappas (D-NH-01) and Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX). My bill would increase the special pension Medal of Honor recipients receive to $100,000 annually. Medal of Honor recipients are brave heroes whose selflessness and valor should inspire every American. While we will never be able to repay these courageous individuals for their extraordinary acts, our nation must do everything we can to show our unwavering support and gratitude for their service. Nehls Attends the House T&I Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials Hearing As a member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines, and Hazardous Materials, I attended a hearing titled "America Builds: Examining America's Freight and Passenger Rail Network." During the subcommittee hearing, I questioned the witnesses and discussed several priorities I will advocate for in the upcoming Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act, which will be the primary piece of legislation the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee will work on during the 119th Congress. The Surface Transportation Reauthorization Act funds federal highway transportation research, intercity passenger rail, and other related programs. I discussed the Railroad Crossing Elimination Grant Program and the rail safety legislation I introduced in the 118th Congress, the Railway Safety Enhancement Act. Watch my questioning of the witnesses HERE on Rumble. Rep. Troy E. Nehls and Sen. Jim Banks Introduce the End Unaccountable Amnesty Act The Biden-Harris Administration’s policies incentivized the worst border crisis in American history. Worse, President Biden and his cronies imported people from all over the world through the CHNV and other mass parole programs, flooding our communities with insufficiently vetted individuals. This week, alongside Senator Jim Banks (R-IN), I introduced the bipartisan End Unaccountable Amnesty Act. This bill would restore congressional oversight over immigration policies and tighten the requirements for the use of Temporary Protected Status (TPS), immigration parole, and the handling of unaccompanied alien children (UAC). Key provisions of the End Unaccountable Amnesty Act include: Restricting TPS Designation and Approval Congress must approve TPS designations, with terms limited to 12 months. Extensions for TPS must be approved by acts of Congress, and TPS would end when conditions in designated countries improve or when the term expires. Limiting Immigration Parole Parole is limited to 1,000 cases annually and restricted to emergencies like urgent medical needs or law enforcement cooperation. Reforming Policies for UACs Stricter criteria for UACs ensure timely, safe repatriation and enhanced DHS oversight of placements within the United States. Prohibiting Certain Identification Documents DHS-issued documents such as CBP One app IDs and DHS-issued Notices to Appear are banned as valid IDs for airport security checks, tightening security protocols. Repealing “Cancellation of Removal” (Section 240A) Repeals provisions that previously allowed certain non-citizens to avoid deportation. Nehls Meets with Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office This week, I had the pleasure of meeting with the Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office in our nation's capital. I took them on a tour of the beautiful United States Capitol and to the House Gallery, where they could watch me cast votes on the House Floor. Thank you for coming by my office! Nehls Votes YES to Pass the Laken Riley Act This week, the U.S. House of Representatives passed S.5, the Laken Riley Act. I proudly voted “YES” to send this legislation to President Donald J. Trump’s desk. This legislation marks the first bill to be sent to the resolute desk. Under the Laken Riley Act, federal officials would be required to detain any illegal alien arrested or charged with crimes like shoplifting or assaulting a police officer or crimes that injure or kill someone. The bill also empowers state attorneys general to sue the federal government for harm caused by failures or decisions in immigration enforcement that harm states or people. That includes releasing illegal aliens from custody or failing to detain migrants who have received deportation orders. Are you excited for Donald J. Trump to be sworn in as our 47th President?
