During the Inaugural Prayer Service, Episcopal Bishop Mariann Budde courageously spoke truth to power from the pulpit. She urged President Trump to “have mercy” on LGBTQ people and immigrants. This quickly led to ire from far-right White Christian nationalists.
People For’s Right Wing Watch covered the response to this event from the White Christian nationalist movement. Trump’s religious-right supporters called the Bishop “heretical” and “diabolical” and that the Washington National Cathedral, where the event was held, was “the Sanctuary of Satan.” [1]

White Christian nationalism is a movement to remake our government and country by forcing all Americans to live in alignment with their exclusionary, anti-freedom religious and political worldview.
Religious freedom is at the core of our American values. We must fight to protect religious diversity AND we must continue to fight against the core tenets of White Christian nationalist ideology. Cornerstones of their ideology include controlling women and reproductive freedom, eliminating rights and freedoms for LGBTQ people, advancing lies about American history to advance their “Christian nation” claims, and remaking our education system to advance their own values.
The values at the core of the American promise are too important to abandon to the ideologues who aim to destroy them. We must stand vigilant to these threats, call them out always, and fight back against bad actors who aim to divide us.
